Recording does not start

Gistleaf needs the microphone and speech recognition permissions, both asked for the first time you record. If you declined one, turn it on under Settings → Gistleaf. Transcription runs on the phone, so it also needs the offline speech model for the language you record in; see the next question.

How do I record in another language?

Choose the languages you speak when you set up the app, or later in the app's Settings tab under Recording → Languages, where you can also remove and reorder them. On the record screen, tap the language above the button to switch before you start talking; once the first words appear, the language stays for that recording. The next recording starts in the language you used last. Each new voice note shows the language it was recorded in. One recording is one language, and because the audio is never kept, a note can't be transcribed again in another language.

A language marked "Not on this iPhone yet" can't be transcribed offline on this phone. Add it as a keyboard in Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards; iOS then downloads its speech model in its own time, sometimes within a day. Until then, choose another language.

My recording ended by itself

Locking the phone or leaving the app ends the recording, and the words captured until then are kept as the note. This is by design: Gistleaf records only while it is on the screen. Keep the phone unlocked for as long as you are talking.

The transcript has mistakes

Transcription happens on the device with Apple's speech recognition, without the audio leaving the phone, and its accuracy depends on the language, the microphone and the surroundings. You can correct the text in the note. Highlights are proposed from the text as it is, so correcting first gives better proposals.

Does it work offline?

Recording, transcription, typed notes, reading your notes and the widgets all work without a connection. AI highlights need a connection, because the model runs on our server; a note recorded offline is queued and its highlights are proposed when the connection is back. Signing in needs a connection the first time.

What does the AI see?

The text of the note, nothing else: no audio, no name, no location. It is sent only after you have agreed to AI highlights in the app and only while the switch is on, through our own server to the AI provider, which does not keep it and does not train on it. You can turn AI highlights off at any time in the app's Settings tab; notes and highlights you already have stay as they are.

What do Keep and Skip do?

Keep makes a highlight yours: it stays with the note and becomes eligible for the widgets. Skip hides it. Pin puts a highlight first and keeps it in Today beyond seven days. On a note, tap the check mark or swipe right to keep a suggestion, tap the cross or swipe left to skip it, and touch and hold any highlight to pin or edit it. You can edit a proposal before keeping it, or write a highlight of your own; edits and your own highlights survive if the note's highlights are ever proposed again.

How do I set up the widget?

Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap the plus button, search for Gistleaf and choose a size. The small widget is a Record button; the medium and large ones show highlights you kept. Widgets show what is on this phone only, and showing highlights in widgets is a separate switch in the app's Settings tab.

I used up this month's AI highlights

The free plan includes 10 AI highlight extractions a calendar month, Premium 200; the count resets on the first of the month. Notes and manual highlights are unlimited on both plans. Upgrading in the middle of a month keeps the month's count and raises the limit at once.

I bought Premium but the app still says free

In the app's Settings tab, open Upgrade and tap Restore purchases while signed in to the Apple ID that made the purchase. Premium is bound to the Gistleaf account that bought it, so also make sure you are signed in to the same Gistleaf account. If it still shows free, write to us with the date of purchase.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone. Cancelling stops future renewals; the period you have paid for runs to its end. Deleting the app or the account does not cancel a subscription.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us: reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue them directly.

What is Back up and sync?

Off by default. When you turn it on in the app's Settings tab, your notes and highlights are stored on our server and kept in step on every phone signed in to your account; when it is off, they exist on this phone only, and deleting the app deletes them. Sync is free. Turning it off later stops uploads; what is already stored stays until you delete it or the account.

Can you read my synced notes? What is end-to-end encryption?

Synced notes are always encrypted on our server, with a key kept apart from the data. With end-to-end encryption on (the app's Settings tab, then End-to-end encryption, while sync is on), your notes are also encrypted on your phone before they leave it, with a key only your phones have, and we can't read them. You get a recovery key when you turn it on: keep it somewhere safe. To use a new phone, show a code on it and scan it with a phone that has the key, or enter the recovery key. If you lose every phone and the recovery key, the encrypted copies can't be recovered, by you or by us; Reset encryption keeps your account and uploads what your phones still hold. AI highlights keep working either way: while they are on, a note's text is sent to make highlights and isn't stored.

Does signing out delete my notes?

No. Signing out keeps the notes on the phone, so a free account never loses its only copy; sign in again to see them. Deleting the account is what removes them.

How do I delete my account?

In the app's Settings tab, Delete account. You confirm with a fresh sign-in, and the deletion runs at once: sign-in, account, usage counts, subscription status and backed-up notes are removed from our systems, Gistleaf is removed from your Apple or Google connected apps, and the notes on the phone are deleted. A record with the account id and dates, no email, is kept for 90 days. Deletion cannot be undone and does not cancel an Apple subscription; cancel that separately. A deletion request can also be sent to dev@ailancer.com from the address of the account.
